LIFE ON THE ROCKS - VIDA EN LES ROQUES

The Hebrides are a remote group of islands to the north-west of Scotland. The weather there can be wild and windy, and in the winter it is sometimes difficult to cross the stormy waters between the islands and Scotland. This means that people on the islands were sometimes isolated in the past. These days there are ferries and planes to the islands. I decided to visit the island of Tiree. It’s one of the nearest islands, but there is only one ferry a day, and it was a long, four-hour journey.
Tiree is quiet and beautiful. There aren’t many cars on the island, and when I visited the primary school the children were having a special lesson to teach them about traffic. This is important for the children if they go to the mainland. At the secondary school there were only foty-two students. On the smaller islands of the Hebrides there aren’t any schools, so the children must go to school by ferry. Sometimes, if the weather’s really bad, they can’t go home.
I stayed in Tiree’s one town, Scarinish. There aren’t any shopping centres or cinemas here, but a mobile cinema sometimes comes from the mainland. At the youth club, teenagers were playing traditional music. Some of them were speaking Gaelic, which most people in Britain can’t understand. The community is traditional, but it is also very active and alive. Tiree is a great place for sport. There’s a windsurfing championship every year in October.

Les Hebrides es un grup d' illes en el nort-est de Escocia. el temps que hi ha es tormentos, i en l'hivern avegades és dificil travessar les tormentoses aigues entre les illes i Escocia.
